The studio

A small team with
a very big backyard

BrightHeartWave is a boutique travel studio in Canberra. We started in 2019 with one LandCruiser, a satellite phone and a stubborn belief that Australia deserves slower travel.

Our story

Built on a
dirt road

Founder Daniel Mercer spent a decade flying charter routes into the outback for mining crews. On his days off he took mates camping — and noticed the good spots were never the ones in the brochures.

So he started a travel studio that works backwards: find the people who actually live somewhere, ask what they'd show a friend, then build the logistics around that. Six years and 240 journeys later, that's still the whole business model.

"Luxury isn't thread count. It's a guide who knows why the river bends."

THE RAINY FIRST TRIP
2019

One truck, one phone

First paying trip: five friends-of-friends, ten days in the Flinders. It rained for three of them. Everybody rebooked.

2021

The access list begins

First private station partnership signed. The "who you know" network that now covers 18 field partners starts here.

2023

Science joins the trips

Citizen-science modules launch — guests help log reef health data and bird counts while they travel.

2025

200% carbon pledge

Every trip now offsets double its calculated emissions through verified Australian revegetation projects.

TODAY

Still small on purpose

Nine staff, one studio, zero call centres. Growth stays capped so every guest gets a designer who knows their name.

The crew

People you'll
actually travel with

No account managers, no handoffs. The person who designs your route is the one answering the satellite phone at 2am.

Nice things
people wrote

We don't buy ads. Occasionally, journalists come along instead — and then this happens.

"The rare travel company that treats remoteness as a privilege, not a product."

TRAVEL WEEKLY AUMAR 2025 · P.44

"A Kimberley itinerary that cost more than my first car and felt like a bargain."

THE SATURDAY PAPERSEP 2024 · P.18

The ledger

Travel leaves a mark.
We count it twice.

Every route gets a carbon audit — flights, vehicles, generators, the lot. Then we offset 200% through verified revegetation, and publish the numbers.
